The Nadal de la Boadella winery was founded at the beginning of the 16th century. According to historical documentation, the Nadal estate has been passed down from father to son time and again, faithful to Catalan tradition. The vineyard and winemaking have never stopped since then. Not even during the Civil War (1936-39), when part of the estate was expropriated to build an airport.
Thus Ramón Nadal was born in 1903, just as the replanting of the vineyards devastated by phylloxera had begun. His entrepreneurial spirit led him, during the Civil War, to send alcohol from his distillery to a winery in La Mancha to make der mistelas. It was an activity that brought him considerable profit. He was an entrepreneur through and through. In 1941, he decided to replant the vineyard that the army had turned into an airfield during the war and to build a wine cellar twenty metres underground, which is still in use today.
Ramón Nadal decided to reorient the family business (brandy distillery) towards the production of sparkling wines. As a result of this evolution, the first bottle of Nadal Brut was released in 1943. To this day, their vineyards remain cultivated according to the guidelines of organic viticulture. They use native varieties of the Penedès -Xarel lo, Xarel lo vermell, Parellada and Macabeu- with which they make long-aged sparkling wines with artisanal rituals of the mèthode champenoise. Since 1998, the range has been expanded and the first dry white wines from the estate were launched on the market. Also, the first natural sweet white botrytis wine was made in Spain with the Macabeo variety.
